Words in Color is an approach to learning to read, write and spell. The approach focuses, first, on people and their natural capacities to learn, and then on the subject matter.
The Words in Color American English Small (8.5" X 11") Set is perfect for 1-on-1 or small group reading and literacy instruction. The set includes everything needed for student success with Words in Color - except the teacher!

Words in Color meets and exceeds the criteria of the National Reading Panel Report of successful reading instruction in all 5 key areas:
1. Phonemic Awareness
See phonemes clearly. Easily identify phonemes, compare phonemes, combine phonemes, and manipulate phonemes. Color is a consistent solution for generating phonemic awareness. By addressing this first, students can avoid the most common reading problems.
2. Phonics Instruction
With Words in Color, associating phonemes with graphemes is straightforward. Color-coding lets students directly perceive which spellings make which sounds by making connections distinct and logical.
3. Fluency
Fluent reading at the pace, rhythm, and intonation of normal speech is built through game-like challenges in which weaknesses are isolated and practiced. The ability to precision target weakness makes teaching with Words in Color effective and efficient.
4. Vocabulary
New words are introduced in such a way that they build upon their prior knowledge. Students independently decode new words that they encounter. The result is a rapid growth in the students vocabulary.
5. Text Comprehension
A system of continuous feedback, and of posing questions rather than answers, ensures that all students understand the challenge put before them. Students are offered several opportunities to practice their reading.

Grade Levels:
The Words in Color Small Set is ideal for teaching reading in classrooms of children in Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3. The set is also used for spelling and introduction of complex words for students in Grade 4 and is used for struggling readers in older grades.
Students With Learning Difficulties:
The Words in Color Small Set has several key features enabling students with various learning difficulties, language difficulties and reading difficulties to begin to master English. In our experience students who need help with reading and have difficulties with phonics, text decoding and children with dyslexia are able to begin to master reading with Words in Color.
The small size charts are ideal for providing one-on-one instruction to struggling students and can be easily carried from room to room by reading specialists.
